Graduate and post-study pathways

Finishing your studies is a key decision point. Depending on your qualification and circumstances, you may be able to stay on to gain work experience, study further or explore other visa options.

The Temporary Graduate visa

The Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) lets some international students stay in Australia after completing eligible study. It has different streams, and eligibility depends on your qualification, when you completed it, your age, English and other requirements. There is a strict time limit to apply after completing your course.

Education-to-migration pathways

For some graduates, study and work experience in Australia may provide a pathway to skilled or employer sponsored visas. This is never automatic. Eligibility depends on the visa and migration rules at the time you apply, your occupation, skills assessment, English, experience and other circumstances.

  • Skilled visas consider occupation, skills assessment and points
  • Employer sponsored visas depend on an employer and the role
  • Regional visas have their own requirements and conditions
  • Plan early: deadlines and rules affect what is possible

Frequently asked questions

Will I get permanent residence after my graduate visa?

The graduate visa is temporary. Some graduates later qualify for skilled or employer sponsored visas, but this depends on current rules and their circumstances, and it is not guaranteed.

When should I start planning for after my studies?

Ideally before you choose your course, and again well before you finish. Deadlines, occupation lists and visa rules can affect your options.
