Visa services
Skilled Migration
Who this is for
- Professionals and tradespeople with qualifications and experience in an occupation Australia needs
- People without a job offer who may meet points-tested requirements
- Applicants open to nomination by a state or territory, or to living in regional Australia
How this pathway works
Most skilled visas start with a skills assessment for your nominated occupation and an Expression of Interest (EOI) lodged in SkillSelect. Points-tested visas rank candidates on factors such as age, English language ability, qualifications and skilled employment.
Depending on the visa, you may also need nomination from a state or territory government, and invitations are issued according to program needs. Because occupation lists, invitation rounds and state priorities change, the right strategy depends on timing as well as eligibility.
Key considerations
- Whether your occupation is on the relevant skilled occupation list
- Which assessing authority assesses your occupation, and what it requires
- Your likely points score and how it could change, for example with English test results or more experience
- State and territory nomination criteria, which differ and change often
- Age and English requirements at the time of invitation and application
Typical documents
Every case is different. These are documents commonly needed for this type of application; your own checklist depends on the visa and your circumstances.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a job offer for skilled migration?
Not always. Some skilled visas are points-tested and do not require an employer sponsor, although nomination by a state or territory government may be needed. Other pathways are employer sponsored. The right option depends on your occupation and circumstances.
What is an Expression of Interest?
An Expression of Interest (EOI) is submitted through SkillSelect to show you want to be considered for a skilled visa. Lodging an EOI is not a visa application: you need an invitation before you can apply.
