Visa services
Employer Sponsored
Who this is for
- Skilled workers with a job offer from an Australian employer
- Temporary visa holders whose current employer wants to sponsor them
- Employers looking to recruit or retain overseas talent
How this pathway works
Employer sponsorship generally involves three stages: the business is approved as a sponsor, the business nominates a specific position, and the worker applies for the visa. Both the employer and the worker must meet requirements relating to the occupation, salary, skills and English.
Temporary and permanent options are available, and some temporary visas can lead to permanent residence after a period of employment.
Key considerations
- Whether the position and occupation are eligible under the relevant program
- Salary requirements and how the market salary rate is worked out
- Labour market testing obligations before nominating
- The worker's skills, qualifications, experience and English
- The employer's ongoing sponsorship obligations
Typical documents
Every case is different. These are documents commonly needed for this type of application; your own checklist depends on the visa and your circumstances.
- Employment contract and position description
- Business registration and financial documents (employer)
- Evidence of labour market testing where required
- Qualifications, references and CV (worker)
- English language test results where required
- Passport and identity documents

Frequently asked questions
Can I change employers on a sponsored visa?
Generally, a new employer needs to lodge a nomination before you start working for them, and your visa conditions continue to apply. Get advice before changing jobs so you do not breach your visa conditions.
Does my employer have obligations after sponsoring me?
Yes. Sponsors must meet ongoing obligations, such as keeping records and paying the nominated salary, and penalties can apply if they do not.
