Study in Australia
Planning your study
Start with what you want to achieve: a career, a qualification, better English, or experience in Australia. The right course and provider follow from that goal, together with your budget, academic background and timing.
International students must study a course registered on CRICOS (the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students) to study on a student visa.
- Check that the provider and course are registered on CRICOS
- Compare entry requirements, course length and total costs
- Consider where you will live and the cost of living there
- Think about how the course fits your career and future plans
Student visa guidance
Most international students need a Student visa (subclass 500). Requirements include enrolment in a registered course, meeting the genuine student requirement, financial capacity, English where required, health insurance (Overseas Student Health Cover) and health and character requirements.
Student visas come with conditions, including limits on work during study periods, that must be followed. We can explain the current requirements for your situation before you apply.
Your rights as an international student
Australia's Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) framework sets standards for providers that enrol international students and includes tuition protection if a provider cannot deliver your course.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to choose a course before applying for a student visa?
Yes. A student visa application generally requires a Confirmation of Enrolment in a registered course, so the course and provider are chosen first.
Can studying in Australia lead to permanent residence?
Study may provide a pathway to other visas for some people, but it does not lead to permanent residence by itself. Eligibility depends on current visa and migration rules, your occupation, experience and other circumstances.
