Visa services
Family Visas
Who this is for
- Parents of Australian citizens, permanent residents or eligible New Zealand citizens
- Dependent children, including adopted children
- Certain other relatives, where eligible
How this pathway works
Family migration covers visas with very different requirements, costs and waiting times. Parent visas, for example, include contributory options with substantially higher government charges and generally shorter waits, and non-contributory options with lower charges but much longer queues.
Many family visas involve a sponsor, the balance of family test or dependency requirements, and in some cases an assurance of support. Choosing the right option means weighing cost, time and eligibility together.
Key considerations
- Which family visa matches your relationship and circumstances
- The balance of family test for parent visas
- Contributory versus non-contributory parent options
- Sponsor requirements and any assurance of support
- Long waiting times for some family visas
Typical documents
Every case is different. These are documents commonly needed for this type of application; your own checklist depends on the visa and your circumstances.
- Birth certificates and evidence of the family relationship
- Passports and identity documents
- Sponsor's evidence of citizenship or permanent residence
- Evidence of where other family members live (balance of family test)
- Financial documents where an assurance of support applies
- Police certificates and health examinations
What the consultation involves
- A review of your background, goals and timeframe
- An explanation of the visa options that may be available, and their pros and cons
- The key requirements and risks to consider for your situation
- The documents you are likely to need
- Fees and next steps, confirmed in writing before any work begins
Frequently asked questions
What is the balance of family test?
It applies to parent visas. Generally, at least half of the parent's children must usually live in Australia, or more of their children must live in Australia than in any other single country.
Can my parents visit while we plan a family visa?
Visitor visas, including longer-stay options for parents, may be available. They are temporary, and their conditions matter if you later apply for another visa.
