Common questions
Points are one part of a skilled visa. You also need a suitable skills assessment, an eligible occupation and to meet health, character and other requirements.
What is the minimum points score for subclass 189, 190 and 491 visas?
The Department of Home Affairs publishes a minimum points score of 65 for these points-tested skilled visas. Meeting 65 points does not guarantee an invitation: invitations also depend on factors such as your occupation, the number of places available and, for subclasses 190 and 491, state or territory nomination requirements.
How do points differ between the 189, 190 and 491 visas?
The points table is the same for all three visas. Subclass 190 adds 5 points for state or territory nomination. Subclass 491 adds 15 points for state or territory nomination, or for sponsorship by an eligible family member living in a designated regional area.
Why are my employment points limited to 20?
The points test caps combined overseas and Australian skilled employment at 20 points, even if your experience would otherwise score more. Employment only counts if it is eligible under the points-test rules, for example in your nominated or a closely related occupation, for at least 20 hours a week, within the 10 years before you are invited to apply.
When is my age assessed for points?
Age points are based on your age when you are invited to apply. Points are available from age 18 up to, but not including, age 45.
Which English test scores count as Proficient or Superior English?
Each English level has minimum scores for every accepted test, such as IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, OET and Cambridge C1 Advanced. Check the current scores on the Department of Home Affairs website before you claim English points.
Can I claim more than one type of partner points?
No. Partner points are a single claim: 10 points if you are single or your partner is an Australian citizen or permanent resident, 10 points if your partner meets the skilled partner requirements, or 5 points if your partner has competent English. Only one of these can be claimed.
Is this calculator a visa assessment?
No. It gives an indicative estimate based on your answers. It does not check your skills assessment, occupation, health, character or any other visa requirement. For advice about your circumstances, book a consultation with a registered migration agent.
