Migration in Victoria
Victoria combines Australia's second-largest city with a large regional network. For migration purposes the distinction matters: Melbourne is classed as a major city, so it is not a designated regional area, while Geelong is Category 2 and the rest of Victoria is Category 3.
That means regional provisional visas can be an option if you plan to live in Geelong or regional Victoria, but not in metropolitan Melbourne. The Victorian Government runs its own skilled visa nomination program, with criteria and priorities that change from year to year.
Key points
- Melbourne: major city (not a designated regional area)
- Geelong: designated regional area, Category 2
- Rest of Victoria: designated regional area, Category 3
- State nomination is managed by the Victorian Government
